Day Nineteen: Be Still
Psalm 46:10,
Be still and know that I am God
Ok, so this one sounds a little counter intuitive and even too simplistic. However, I bet it’s one of the most neglected forms of worship for each of us. Be Still and know that I am God. I would take this further yet and even go so far as to say and meditate. Over the years the term meditation has received bad connotations from new age movements. I am not suggesting clearing your mind of emotions and thoughts and reaching another consciousness. Joshua 1:8 says to meditate on God’s word and be careful to do what it says. In Psalm 46, leading up to verse 10, we see language of the earth giving way and mountains falling into the sea (vs.2), unrest among nations (vs. 6), and desolations (vs. 8). The things of life can start to be overwhelming and occupy a lot of real estate in our minds which takes our focus off the game. The game of living for Christ. How can we hear God and meditate on His word if we don’t take time and let him speak to us?
I’ve taken the radio out of my Jeep in order to motivate me to fix an issue I have with my gas gauge. First, because it’s in the way and second, I can’t live without my radio, so I’ll be motivated. Plus, I thought it would be good to have quiet time with God, either thinking, praying or allowing God to speak to me. Well, it’s been a year and my gas gauge is not fixed and I haven’t had music in my Jeep since. To some, the gas gauge may be the priority but to me, it’s the radio. Needless to say, I have had some great moments of reflection where God has impressed on me many things.
You see, quietness allows for those opportunities to hear from God. Luke 5:16 says that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Have you ever noticed that in scripture? Jesus was always retreating to lonely places to spend time with God in order to commune with God and hear from him. When Jesus humbled himself and came to earth to dwell among his creation, he took on all the limitations of man and showed us the importance of being alone with God. How much more do we need to take times of solitude and commune with God?
Be still!!
