Day 6: God as Judge

“Our God, will you not judge them?” (v. 12)

At times, we judge human beings created in the image of God.

It’s sin. We make quick assumptions, harbor ugly thoughts and feelings, or say things that are out of alignment with Christian character.

When we look down on others, we are essentially puffing ourselves up in comparison. At that moment, we think we are better. That’s not true. We have no goodness apart from Christ. The Bible tells us that our righteousness (our feelings of moral superiority) are like filthy rags.

So, when we are tempted to judge, let’s press pause.

Remember who you were before Christ. God was (and is) patient with you and me. He extends that patience to every single person. He doesn’t want anyone to perish, but all to come to repentance.

Check your own heart. Let’s work on removing the giant planks in our own eyes before we even think about addressing the specks in our neighbors’ eyes.

Lastly, remember that the world will know we are Christians by our love.

It’s God’s kindness that leads us to repentance. So, do good to the people God puts into your path. Shine a light in the darkness by your attitude, actions, and faithful witness. In time, others will see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Choosing to withhold judgment does not mean we’re condoning sin. The Spirit will help us discern when to speak up and when to remain silent. Be patient. You never know when a hardened heart will soften to the truth of the gospel.

Scripture reading: Luke 6:27-38

Today’s encouragement: If there is someone you’ve judged today, pray for that person. Be on the lookout for ways to encourage them.

Prayer: God, help me to see people the way you see them. I look at the outward appearance, but you look at the heart.
