I Am: The Door
Object Lesson: Go to a room in your house with only one door.
Ask: How do you get into this room? Is there any other way in?
Doors are kind of important, aren’t they? Every day we walk through all kinds of them and they give us access to different people, places and experiences. Doors also offer us privacy and protection from things outside. Sometimes there are multiple doors to a space (like a building), and other times there is only one (like your bedroom or a bathroom).
In Bible times, shepherds would stay and watch over their flock of sheep. They didn’t have fenced pastures and big red barns like we have today so the shepherds had to live with the sheep. During the day they would take the sheep into fields to eat and at night they would put them in a small rock-walled pen that only had one opening. The shepherd would lay down to sleep in the opening, becoming a kind of door. The only way in or out was through him. The sheep were then safe and could rest.
Read: John 10:9
Jesus tells us that there is only one way for us to be saved and that is through him. When we realize that Jesus is God’s Son and choose to follow him, then we enter into a relationship with Jesus and become part of his family (or flock). We can’t get in on our own. We can’t do enough good things to earn it. We can only trust Jesus and enter through him. And when we are part of his family, he protects us and gives us life. This is why he came! You can choose to follow Jesus today! If you are already following him, then be thankful for his protection!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to help us become part of your family. In Jesus name, Amen.
